Backyard Gardening Tips

Now, it’s nice to envision having a picture-perfect herb garden that makes your neighbors jealous.  However, there are some strategic practices that should be in place to help you succeed with your new herb garden.  So here we go!  Consider these top tips:

  1. Find a sunny spot with good drainage.  Sunshine and water help to create osmosis for plant growth.  These two items are the secret sauce to a great garden.
  2. FYI, if you are planting mint.  Make sure to plant mint separately from the other herbs in the garden.  Mint has a tendency to grow…quickly and can overtake the space reserved for the other herbs.
  3. Combine seeds and plants.  Some herbs will grow timely with others, while you may want to simply start with plants that already have some growth on them for quicker blooming.
  4. Perennials Anyone?   Perennials like thyme, sage, fennel, and chives will come back year after year with good maintenance.  This is a nice aspect for affordability, and, recipe planning.
  5. The Dont’s.  Don’t over-fertilize, over-water, or over-plant.  Moderation is key to the sustainable growth and production of your new herb garden.
  6. Harvest Often.  Harvesting the herbs in your garden promotes their growth.  When harvesting make sure to snip the herbs with scissors instead of tearing them.  When an herb displays a flower it is typically a sign that it is finishing its lifecycle.
