Summer provides us with the opportunity to enjoy food choices that we may not indulge in during the rest of the year.  Perhaps desserts and sweets are available at a barbecue or party.  Or, maybe we see a sweet fruity cocktail on the horizon for our summer vacation.

Food choices drive our overall health and your oral health is no different.  Being able to manage eating patterns and having the knowledge about appropriate food choices during situations that tempt your taste buds can make all the difference.

With this in mind, the team at Dental Specialists of Niles, P.C. has put together a quick reference guide for our patients and blog readers to use this summer in order to assist with better food choices that help to lead to better oral health.

  1. Sugar-Free Options.  Sugar free foods that contain sugar substitutes taste like they have sugar but do not.  Thus, they are digested differently and do not help to promote bacteria in the mouth that produce acids that decay teeth.
  2. Portion Control.  Yes, that’s right.  The two words everyone hates to hear when they are having a “diet cheat day”.  This boils down to simple math.  The more food you eat that is not health for you, the more you promote poor overall and oral health.
  3. Fruits and Vegetables.  Fruits and vegetables offer a great alternative to sweetened foods and are much more helpful in sustaining better oral health.  The high water content in these types of foods helps to dilute the sugars that they contain.
  4. Beverage of Choice.   The best choice is water hands down.  However, if you are indulging in a sugary beverage or alcoholic beverage that contains a sugar mix, be sure to enjoy a nice glass of H2O to help wash away the excess sugar.
